DO:

Turn
off water at the source. Know where shut-off
valves are for sinks and toilets before an
emergency happens

Allow faucets to drip slowly during below
freezing temperatures to avoid bursting pipes
-
Periodically check the washing machine water
hose line to ensure proper function. This a very
common cause of insurance related water loss.

Call
your insurance agent to report any necessary
claim.

Call

Remove as much excess water from flooring
and furniture as possible by using a wet-vac
or mopping and blotting with clean white
towels (to avoid color transfer)

Remove lamps and knick-knacks from table
tops

Unload China cabinets and bookshelves.
Furniture will have to be moved for complete
drying of carpet

Remove wet sofa and/or chair cushions. Stand
up for even drying.

Place wood or foam blocks or aluminum foil
between furniture legs and wet
carpeting/flooring.

Raise curtains or drapes.
-
Open drawers and cabinet doors. Do not force
open if swollen as further damage can occur.

Punch small holes in sagging ceilings to
relieve trapped water.

Shut off water
supply lines to faucets and appliances when on
vacation or when the home will be vacant for an
extended period of time.

DON’T:

Turn
up heat in wintertime. Moist heat causes
humidity to spread to walls and ceilings
throughout the house.

Turn
on ceiling fans or lights if ceiling is wet.

Stay
in rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Walk
on wet carpet.
-
Leave wet fabrics in place; instead, dry them as
soon as possible.

Leave colored items on wet carpet, floors or
furniture.

Use
your household vacuum to remove water.

Use
TV’s or other appliances that have come in
contact with water.
